Stanford Diversity Fellowship Program for Magazine Publishers

THE PROGRAM
The Stanford Publishing Courses division of Stanford University believes that having a diverse workforce in the U.S. publishing industry--with diversity being broadly defined and including factors such as race, ethnicity, culture, class and disadvantaged background--is important to the vitality of the publishing industry. For that reason, we have created a fellowship program to encourage such diversity, both in the industry in general, and in our Course in particular. For this Fellowship program, we especially welcome applications from African Americans, Hispanic Americans, Native Americans and others whose backgrounds or experience would provide additional dimensions to the educational environment and the quality of intellectual discussion during the Course.

CRITERIA
The fellowship, which is designed to support a U.S. citizen or permanent resident currently working in magazine publishing, covers full tuition and housing during the Main Session of the Stanford Professional Publishing Course. It does not include tuition or housing for the Pre-Course, nor does it include travel costs.

APPLICATION PROCESS
To apply, download and complete an application form, and submit it by mail along with your supplemental materials and a one-page personal statement that explains how your background would contribute to diversity (broadly defined) in the U.S. publishing industry. Be sure that you specify that you are applying for the Stanford Diversity Fellowship for Magazine Publishers. As awards are based on need as well as on experience and merit, we also require a brief memo from a representative in your organization stating that outside tuition assistance is the only means of getting you to the program in July. Applicants for financial aid do not need to include the application fee.

Application deadline: May 15, 2008

Magazine Publishers of America (MPA) Foundation Award

THE PROGRAM
Magazine Publishers of America (MPA) believes that having a diverse workforce in the U.S. publishing industry--with diversity being broadly defined and including factors such as race, ethnicity, culture, class and disadvantaged background--is important to the vitality of that industry. They have therefore created a fellowship program to encourage such diversity.

Each MPA fellowship provides a full financial aid package equal to the amount of tuition and lodging for the Stanford Professional Publishing Course. Fellowships do not include travel costs.

CRITERIA
To qualify for an award, the applicant must be an employee of an MPA-member company or a member of the American Society of Magazine Editors (ASME) currently living and working in the United States. In addition, the applicant should be able to bring to discussions a clearly diverse point of view. Applications from African Americans, Mexican Americans, Native Americans and others with diverse backgrounds are welcome.

APPLICATION PROCESS
To apply, download and complete an application form, and submit it by mail along with your supplemental materials and a one-page personal statement that explains how your background would contribute to diversity (broadly defined) in the U.S. publishing industry. As we base these awards on need as well as on experience and merit, we also require a brief memo from a representative in your organization stating that outside tuition assistance is the only means of getting you to the program in July.
